4 Steps to Breast Health

On the surface, 240,500 new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. each year is alarming.* But there is some good news in that statistic... at least part of that increase reflects the introduction of new advanced detection technologies and doctors' abilities to spot breast cancer at a much earlier stage than was possible just a few years ago. And that means a much higher rate of survival. In fact, breast health and improving your chance of surviving breast cancer is as easy as four simple steps. *American Cancer Society

Mammography

Mammography is a low-dose x-ray examination that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt. The effectiveness of mammography within varying age groups has been the subject of much research and debate. Evidence indicates it is less beneficial in younger women than older. The American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recommend annual mammograms for all women beginning at age 40. Call your personal healthcare provider today to schedule an appointment.

Clinical Breast Exam

A clinical exam by your healthcare provider is recommended at least every 3 years between ages 20-39 and every year beginning at age 40. Having your breasts examined by an experienced professional is an essential part of overall good healthcare. Call your personal healthcare provider today to schedule an appointment.

Monthly Self Exam

Seventy percent of all breast cancers are found through self-breast exams, so it is important to become familiar with your breasts through monthly self-exams. If you do find a lump, don't panic; 8 out of 10 breast lumps are not cancerous.* But do call your doctor for an immediate appointment. Self-breast exams are something you do in addition to mammography and regular clinical exams. It is not a replacement for those steps. Mammograms can give you up to a two-year head start on treating and surviving breast cancer. Hang your mirror cling on your bathroom mirror to remind you to do your monthly self-exam.
